Breast Reconstruction
Breast Reconstruction Perth, Western Australia
Who is a Good Candidate for Breast Reconstruction?
- Patients who are about to have or have had a mastectomy due to breast cancer.
- Patients who feel unattractive and self conscious about their appearance after losing their breasts.
- Patients who feel less feminine and wish to avoid external prostheses following the loss of one or both of their breasts.
The Breast Reconstruction Procedure
There are many techniques used in a breast reconstruction: in general there are three groups of procedures:- Insertion of implants.
- Insertion of tissue expanders and later an implant is inserted. Tissue expanders are temporary implants inflated with saline to stretch out the skin and later removed and permanent gel implants are inserted.
- Flaps: This procedure involves the transfer of tissue from other parts of the body such as the back (Latissimus dorsi) or abdomen (TRAM flap). These procedures may require micro surgery.
- The nipple and areola can also be reconstructed.
- The other breast may require surgery to reshape it to match the reconstructed breast. This may involve breast enlargement, breast reduction or breast uplift.
The Recovery after Breast Reconstruction
- This depends on the type of procedure performed. (Chris Allen will discuss this with you in a consultation).
The Results after Breast Reconstruction
- A breast mound that looks like a breast in clothes and which matches the shape and size of the other breast, however, it will not look or feel exactly the same as the previous breast.
