Who is a Candidate for Ear Surgery?
- Patients who are self conscious about their protruding ears and wish to have them pinned back.
- Patients whose ears do not have natural creases or folds.
- Patients who dislike the appearance of their ears in photographs.
The Procedure for Ear Surgery
- Local or general anaesthesia can be used and the ear surgery takes about one to one and a half hours.
- The incision is usually located behind the ear.
- The cartilage is then reshaped and sutured in place to create the natural fold and decrease the prominence.
- Occasionally, a piece of cartilage is removed to reduce the size of the ear.
- The wounds are sutured with dissolving sutures.
Recovery After Ear Surgery
- You can go home the next day or sometimes on the same day.
- The head is wrapped in gauze dressing to help the moulding of the ears.
- After a few days the bulky gauze dressing is removed and a headband can be worn at night.
- Most patients experience minimal pain that is mostly gone by the second or third day and easily controlled by medications.
- Swelling is mild to moderate for the first week and disappears thereafter.
- The ears may ache for a few days after ear surgery.
- Patients may resume many activities with the second week and most by the third week.
- No sutures are removed, as they are all dissolvable.
- Off work for about one week.
Results from Ear Surgery
- Better balance of the facial features.
- More natural curvature of the ears.
- Improved appearance with the ears pinned back.
