Who is a Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?
- Patients who feel their eyelids appear sad, tired or old
- Patients with excess skin with hooding of the upper lids
- Patients who cannot easily apply makeup to the upper eyelids
- Patients with excess skin, wrinkles, bags or puffiness to the lower eyelids
- Patients who have difficulty with their vision when looking upward
The Procedure for Eyelid Surgery
- Local or general anaesthesia can be used for eyelid surgery it takes about one to two hours
- In the upper eyelid an incision is made in the natural crease, excess skin and fat are removed
- In the lower eyelid an incision is made below the eyelashes and in the creases of the outer part of the corner of the eye. Excess skin and fat are trimmed
- The muscles are tightened or lifted
- The incisions are closed with very fine sutures which are mostly dissolvable
- This can be combined with facelift surgery
Recovery After Eyelid Surgery
- You can go home the next day or sometimes on the same day
- You can shower the day after your eyelid surgery
- Most patients experience minimal pain that is mostly gone by the second or third day and easily controlled by medications
- Swelling is mild to moderate for the first week and disappears thereafter
- Minimal bruising which is at its maximum at two days and then disappears by seven to ten days
- You are able to apply makeup in five to six days and comfortably appear in public at that time
- Resume many activities within the first week and most by at least three weeks
- Some sutures removed at four days and the rest are dissolvable
- Off work for three to six days
