It is not a substitute for weight reduction or a cure for obesity.

General anaesthesia is used and the surgery takes about one to three hours, depending on the amounts and location.
Incisions are small (1cm) and inconspicuous, usually located in natural skin folds to minimise scarring.
Fluid is injected into the fat (tumescent liposuction) to allow for easier removal of the fat.
The procedure involves the removal of fat by suction, or ultrasonic disruption.
Small, hollow tubes are inserted underneath the skin to suction out the fat carefully.
No drains are used.
A compression garment is worn for three to four weeks.
Liposuction or Liposculpture can be combined with other plastic surgical procedures.

You can go home the next day or sometimes on the same day.
Most patients experience minimal pain that is mostly gone by the next day and easily controlled by medications.
Swelling is mild to moderate for two to three days, and then disappears rapidly over the next three weeks.
There may be some bruising for one to two weeks.
You can resume light activities within the first week and most normal activities by at least three weeks.
Expect to be off work for about one to seven days.
