Who is a Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?
- Patients with abdominal features that result from pregnancy or large weight loss.
- Excess skin folds or loose overhanging skin of the lower abdomen
- Unsightly stretch marks or previous scars that you would like removed.
- Excess fatty accumulation in the abdomen.
- A bulge and protuberance in the lower abdomen that results from stretched abdominal muscles.
The Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) Procedure
- General anaesthesia is used and the surgery takes about three hours.
- A bikini excision is made that is hidden low on the abdomen and concealed by even revealing garments. A second excision is made around the umbilicus (belly button).
- The loose, stretched muscles are tightened with sutures.
- Excess skin and fat are removed.
- The umbilicus (belly button) is preserved and looks natural and youthful.
- The skin excisions are sutured with buried dissolving sutures.
- Drains are often inserted to eliminate fluid build-up and a firm elastic support garment is applied.
- This can be combined with other surgeries such as liposuction or hysterectomy.
Recovery After a Tummy Tuck or Abdominoplasty
- You will usually stay in hospital for three to four days.
- Drains are used for several days.
- You can shower on the third day after surgery.
- Moderate discomfort for the first two days that is much less by the third day and easily controlled by medications.
- You will be reviewed after one week when the dressings are changed.
- The support garment is usually worn for two to four weeks.
- Swelling is mild to moderate for the first week, after which it rapidly disappears.
- Usually only very mild or no bruising.
- Resume many activities after first week and most by at least four weeks.
- No sutures are removed as they are all dissolvable.
- Off work for about two to four weeks, depending on the activity of your work.
Results from a Tummy Tuck
- Firmer, flatter, more contoured and tighter abdomen.
- Better fitting clothing and the ability to wear smaller sizes.
- A natural result that improves with time and is usually permanent.
- Natural and presentable appearance for the first week that improves over the next three to six months.
Mini Abdominoplasty
- Less extensive procedure for localised fullness of the lower abdomen.
- Corrects abdominal bulging and localised obesity or stretched skin from pregnancy.
- A shorter transverse excision is used in the bikini line. No incision is required around the umbilicus.
- Muscle is tightened.
- The umbilicus retains the same shape and position and is not moved.
- The wound is closed using dissolvable sutures.
